Hida-Furukawa offers various points of interest for tourists, including nostalgic streets with white earthen old storehouses and the Seto River whose clear water gently flows through town. A stroll of the old neighborhood along the river can also cleanse one’s soul. Every year, January 15 is reserved for “Three Temple Visits,” in which residents and visitors, walking peacefully along streets lit by thousands of candles, go to pray at the three temples located in the downtown area. On April 19th and 20th, the town is overwhelmed by the passion and vigor of men beating drums for the annual “Furukawa Festival.” This fascinating combination of action and stillness attracts visitors, who tend to come back over and over again.

Hida no Takumi Heritage Center
The center is designed to demonstrate the superior skills of Hida’s carpenters (takumi), who have been called upon to build major shrines and temples since the days of Yamato dynasty (4th century). Especially popular among family visitors is a hands-on corner, where children can try their hand at putting together wooden puzzles to make a traditional hound’s tooth design.
