This town is the birthplace of one of Japan’s most famous novelist, Shimazaki Toson, and the venue of his best known work, “Before the Dawn,” whose main character is modeled after his own father. The town features a Toson Museum and many other locations related to the great novelist, as well as 600 meters of preserved cobblestone street, lined with old inns, residences and souvenir shops, some dating back to the days when it was a post-station town.
